PLOT AND PACE
Sunday, October 13, 2024  3:00 – 4:30 PM ET (eastern time, USA) – Please note that this workshop takes place on Sunday instead of Saturday

The folk song “Shenandoah” is a slow-unfurling song, music that asks its listeners to pause. Gustav Mahler’s “Adagietto,” the fourth movement of his Fifth Symphony, yields romance, a story of sustaining love. Maroon 5’s song “Memories” is a song about loss and remembering, written in the aftermath of the death of the lead singer’s friend. The pace and plot of these songs are intertwined—their rhythms are the story.

What can we learn from these artists as we write our scenes and stories? What new tools and wisdoms can we apply to the stories that we tell? In this one-of-a-kind masterclass, Beth Kephart presents brand new possibilities, offers original prompts inspired by William Sulit’s art, and deconstructs her own approach to writing situation, scene, and story.

One hour and fifteen minute lecture / fifteen minute Q and A session.
