Writing can keep us in the perpetual present, it can send us back in time, it can carry us ahead of the hour of our days, it can enable us to newly see. In this illustrated presentation, I’ll be talking about writers like Michelle Zauner, Debra Gwartney, Nicholas Montemarano, and Elizabeth McCracken—and how they write of loss in ways that enable us both to stand beside them and to learn something new about ourselves. What can they teach us? What have I learned from writing loss? A penetrating look at the deep stuff of life. I share a few takeaway prompts at the end.
