writing the other
Sunday, September 13, 2020, 3 PM – 4:15 PM EST
In memoir we are rarely alone on the page; there’s often someone else in the room, in our memories, or just around the corner. Perhaps we know that person well, or think we do. Perhaps that person is a perfect, intriguing stranger. This workshop will focus on the ways in which we bring the other into our work—how we go beyond merely describing the other to trying to develop a greater sense of their personal history and mythology. The work of Jeff Sharlet, Richard Ford, James Baldwin, Virginia Woolf, Nick Flynn, Mary-Louise Parker, Geoffrey Wolff, and Gail Caldwell will guide this workshop. Exercises will focus on character development.
