“THINK OF MEMOIR AS A BRIDGE, A STRUT, A SPAN CONNECTING THE KNOWN AND THE UNKNOWN, THE DISTANT AND THE NEAR, THE YOU AND THE ME. THINK OF MEMOIR AS POLITICS.” – BETH KEPHART

WHAT WILL WE DO?

Our fall workshop will focus on singular moments and universal themes—how the particulars of our lives can (and must) be elevated to universal themes that render our stories powerful, impactful, and lasting. Inspired by brilliant memoirists as well as music, images, and spices, we’ll spend our mornings at work on miniature portraits of people and landscapes. In the afternoons, we’ll review excerpts from manuscripts in progress. As the week progresses, we’ll discover common, universal themes.

Prepare for craft lectures, individual critique, and the creation of new work that originates from prompts. We will make room each day for private 30-minute sessions with Beth.

IS IT RIGHT FOR YOU?

This workshop is the right workshop for those who have a story to tell, an interest in the art of memoir, and a desire to learn through readings, prompts, and guided feedback.

WHAT TO SEND IN ADVANCE

Please submit, with your application, a 300-word essay that tells a true story that involves you behind the wheel of a car.

Additionally, to help ensure that you get the most out of our time together, please send, one month in advance, up to 3,000 words of a piece you would like deep feedback on.
